The room was packed with women.
And, as usual, I was ambivalent about attending ladies retreat that year.
It was sunny (of course). So, I thought longingly of the list on my kitchen counter instead. And all of the places I wasn’t, and of all the things I wouldn’t be doing.
That was until she stood. And she weaved stories about women for women in that special way that just fits.
And, as usual, somewhere along the way the sun and the to-do list were forgotten in favor of enjoying a few hours with hearts shaped like mine.
So we laughed.
We laughed about shopping and about getting older. And about the woman who always sleeps with her makeup on. We laughed about losing our way—the way she did.
And she told us a story about standing in front of a store directory, confused, with her life at her feet, feeling as far away from where she wanted to be as could be. She said words and an arrow marked the spot where she stood. Made a mark right on her heart.
And, suddenly, we’re full and no longing laughing.
“You’re here,” she said pointing. “And this is the spot you’re standing on.”
Right where you are…
And right where you are? Well, it’s enough. Right where you are is enough not because of you or I, but because He is Enough.
”This is the spot you’re standing on.” And Enough is standing there waiting.
And, yet, most days I don’t particularly like where I am.
I don’t particularly like “this is what I think…and
here I am, this is what I feel, and O God,
show me Yourself, and the truth of who You are
and the truth of who I am in this place.”
And, yet, Enough still stands and waits.
Dear heart, remember especially on those days:
Remember that right where you are…is a place He already sees.
Because right where you are…is where He first loves.
And, yes, like Jacob, sometimes it’s the place where who you are will wrestle with who you’re made to be.
Because, dear heart, right where you are…well, that’s the only place He saves.
Getting up and going there with Jesus. Every day, you and I. Right where we are.
