Seven of us sat around her table the other Saturday. There we laughed, eat quiche and gulped down our coffee without saying much about much at first, but on the inside we were thinking how things were about to change…
When I was little, I would stand in the middle of my bed (it was a double so it was wide) and lean back until my feet lifted right up off the covers, falling backwards into the mattress with a bounce. I would repeat this over and over.
Now that I’m older, it feels like it takes a small arsenal to get me to loosen my grip sometimes. Giving up on normal isn’t easy and holding life loosely is hard. Holding on, we get. Letting go is something else altogether. Letting go is much harder.
Still, God is not surprised by where we are, ever. Wherever it is we can be sure of this: God’s heart and His plans stand firm. “The plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations” (Psalm 33:11).
Scary as it might look or feel, you and I can lean back until our spiritual feet lift up and let go…knowing “it is the Lord’s purpose that [will] prevail” (Proverbs 19:21, NIV).
In Psalm 30, David was running hard and running scared and still he wrote, “But I trust in you, LORD; I say, ’You are my God.’ My times are in your hands” (Psalm 30:14-15a, NIV).
In our panic to see God’s movement it’s tempting to hold on too tightly. It helps to remember God’s heart is behind our times and the shape of our seasons. Love is never late. The purposes of God’s heart toward us, friends, are always good.
God is the one holding our times in His hands. So, go ahead. Trust God, stand up, and lean back until your spiritual feet lift off the covers and you fall into His purposes with a bounce. God’s heart is there to catch you…and I am here rooting for you.
Then, let’s you and I get up and do it all over again.
