You know the feeling you get when your child leans in and whispers that special “something” in your ear? When without any warning, you find yourself left holding something precious—a child’s dream—in your hands.
One minute everything is fine. And in the next? She sidles over, leaning in real close, hesitating… until eventually, she whispers out the words “Mama, I want to dance.”
The shy one, you know?
And if I didn’t know any better, I think my heart might faint from all the bigness of it… That moment when I realize this child-woman, at a time when all I wanted to do was run and hide, dreams of twirling and spinning and dancing in front of us all.
So with insides all scared, I set out to find a place for her to bloom.
There’s the nervous symphony of giggles, the girlhood chatter combined with an occasional squeal. Then my crowded wait amongst long opinions, until she comes out all shining and grinning broadly, tired and the happiest she’s been in a long time, and we end the late night with an even later dinner, devoured from plastic containers during an exhausting drive home.
There were the tumbles, the not-quite-rights and the try-agains, with body all sore and blue marks on her knees, until the day finally came when
As her mama, my heart’s left clinging to this: that every dream, every longing…, realized or not, is meant to pull her deeper into the heart of Enough. God is the ultimate dream-keeper because He’s the ultimate dream-giver. And if I look closely enough I see the dream for what it really is…an invitation to intimacy.
James says “let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time (James 4:7, MSG).”
So for the days when it feels tough and you’re all bruised from the not-quite-rights and the try-agains, and you’re tempted to quit, let me just lean in with James for a moment right here and say: give your soft “yes” to God. Will you? Because every dream, every longing…, realized or not, is meant to pull us deeper into the heart of Enough.
So do this for me, will you? Until the dream stands all solid in front of your eyes, say yes to His invitation to intimacy just one more time…right where you are? I promise you, He’ll be there in no time. And…someday soon? You just might find yourself twirling and spinning and dancing in front of us all.
Let me take a moment to say writing feels an aweful lot like dancing in public—what I mean by that is, terrifying. (At least for an introvert like myself…)
But there is something important, here, I’d like to say to you… Are you ready? (Perhaps you’ve guessed.)
From the bottom of my heart, thank-you, for lingering over these pages…for reading, for taking the time to leave a precious comment.
Finally, I’m over-the-moon delighted to announce my first “something”, a short piece, will be published this fall… And this heart of mine is jumping for joy, crazy grateful (you name it!) to share this with you.
Thank-you, for joining me on this journey!
